36 Days Until Christmas!

Each gift that was brought to Jesus that first Christmas had intentional meaning. We don’t know if the wise men truly understood the significance of each gift. Maybe they just presented the new king with the best supplies they had and it just so happened to be somewhat prophetic on what Jesus would become. However, I think it is more likely they very intentionally gave the gifts, being aware of the prophecies of the Messiah.

When the Magi arrived, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were living in a house in Bethlehem. Notice, this is no longer a stable. Matthew 2:11 says the Magi entered the house. Some time has definitely passed since Jesus was born. It may be a few weeks, but could have been up two years.

The first gift they gave was gold. Gold represented Jesus as king. Gold was a common gift to give a king. Consider how much gold God used in the construction of the temple Solomon built. Why so much? It was a demonstration of the power and value of the king. Jesus being presented with gold signified to everyone that this child was no ordinary baby.

In Revelation 19:16 Jesus is named as the “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” The wise men give us a glimpse of that during the first ever Christmas gift-giving.

Question: when you give gifts this year, what will it signify? Will it have meaning attached to it or just a name and price tag? Be intentional. The wise men let it be known they believed Jesus was king and their gift of gold proved it. Let your gifts this year speak volumes in your relationships.

Merry Christmas!
