31 Days Until Christmas!
Did you ever peak? Did you ever try to get a sneak peak of what you might open on Christmas? The following story is completely true and was the most popular post I shared back in 2016.
I think it was around 1994 or 1995. I asked for the Super Nintendo game, Super Wrestlemania. The tree was up, many of the presents were wrapped, and the guessing began. Looking at each package, lifting it up, examining it, trying to figure out if it is something I asked for…that was joy.
But, my excitement for the game got the best of me. One night, my family decided to go out to eat at the Chinese restaurant in Hillsboro, IL where my sister was a waitress. I asked if I could stay home as I did not feel like going out. They said that was fine and left.
As soon as they left, I waited a few minutes to make sure they would not turn around because they bought something. Then, I grabbed a pair of scissors and carefully opened the wrapping of a present that looked like my game. As I opened the end, I saw the title, “Super Wrestlemania.” I was so excited…so excited I could not wait until Christmas.
What was I to do? I slid the box out of the wrapping paper, careful not to damage the paper. I cut the plastic around the game and tore it by accident. I decided I would figure out how to fix that later. I took the game to my room and played several matches. I wanted to keep playing but decided that I better get it put away before anyone came home. I put the game back in the box, put the plastic around it, taped the plastic on, and realized it looked terrible. Mom and dad would be able to see the plastic was taped with a simple glance. What was I to do? I figured it was a problem for later. I slid the game box back into the wrapping paper, taped the end closed right over the tape that was there to begin with, and put it back under the tree.
When Christmas morning arrived, I had my plan. When it was my turn to open the present, I vigorously ripped open the paper, taking the plastic off the game box to begin, and quickly opened the box to see the game and the instruction booklet. I looked up and mom and dad were not even looking at me. I had got away with it.
Now, while we don’t encourage anyone to peak at the presents early, God gave us a sneak peak of that first Christmas back in Isaiah 7:14 when we read, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
What does Immanuel mean? God with us. That is just what we need.
